Project Description:
This set of Cattle Yards was constructed for 20,000 cattle through per year. Using 1.2mm hi-tensile galvanised Presto Panel and round timber posts (can also use steel posts for Presto Panel). For attachment using an air ratchet gun put a M10 x 75mm coach screw in the top and bottom valleys of the panel (can also use type 17 timber drilling teks, refer to page 19 of the Presto Handbook). At gateways the timber posts were carved out to enable the 29mm (1 ⅛") Presto hills to be housed safely. The square pattern in the concrete, enables the cattle to have more grip. The concrete base of the yards was tilted slightly to allow run-off when cleaning. Curving was a critical part of this project as the farmer wanted to utilize the animals’ instinctual habits and keep good flow in his race. Closing the gaps on the 4 lower rails and adding an extra fifth rail with a platform on the opposite side to lean over and inspect the animals. The rolled edges increase the safety of both man and beast whilst doing this. The Presto Panel was cut to length and the curves were designed to the farmers specifications, ensuring no wastage. This reduces the construction labour component, saving time and money. Due to the width, 207mm (8 ¼"), you will use less panels and yet have greater overall coverage.
This farmer first purchased Presto Panel in 1998, he has since purchased Presto Panel for another 10 sets of yards; equating to over 10kms in total thus far. In his words, he would "use nothing else".
Success comes from doing your home-work, and creating a design that fits with the lay of your land. You can utilize the understanding you have of the animals and formulate a plan that will work well for you. With Presto, you can use a product that supports your ideas, guarantees minimal maintenance, is visible to the animal and creates good flow in your yards.
